Are you curious why adding bone broth to your diet could help with fighting infections, improve digestion, strengthen bones and joints, support better sleep, hydration and increase mineral absorption?
What is Bone Broth?
Bone broth is a nutritious stock made from simmering animal bones and connective tissues for a long period of time to allow all the nutrients to be released.
The process of simmering bones with water, vegetables and herbs has been around for a long time and it's now gaining a whole new generation of devotees.
Incorporating both the feet and neck of chickens aong with the carcass will create a bone broth rich in the powerful health properties of a collagen-rich broth.
Benefits of Using Chicken Feet & Necks.
Collagen rich broth improves skin, hair, nail strength and skin.
Collagen is very soothing to the stomach lining and helps to tighten the junctions which can losen through our modern diet.
Added hydration by drinking bone broth daily.
Added folate which can help to prevent birth defects during pregnancy.
Better joint health with less pain without medication.
Stable blood sugar levels.
Better digestion.
I encourage you to include both chicken feet & necks for added collagen and remember it's really important to purchase chicken feet and necks from an organic, regenerative source to ensure that your broth will be free of toxins and unwanted chemicals.
I highly recommend Burroughs Family Farms as an excellent option.
You can order here.
That gelatin [collagen] in bone broth converts into cartilage and muscle better than amino acids alone, which keeps our joints healthy.
Drinking or incorporating bone broth into your diet is an easy way to improve so many health issues. Making it at home is easy and you know what's in it, so you can drink with confidence knowing that you're improving your health.
I love using a slow cooker so it can simmer for over 24 hours which releases all the beneficial collagen along with nutrients into the broth.
Key Ingredients.
Chicken bones, feet and necks [I use the carcass of a roasted chicken plus a few chicken feet and 2-3 extra chicken necks.]
Acid. Try 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar or lemon juice to increase amino acids to leach out of the bones into the broth.
Veggies. I use 3 carrots, 3 stalks of celery, 1 onion, 4-5 garlic cloves.
Herbs. I like a bunch of parsley, a few sprigs of fresh thyme and a bay leaf
Filtered Water. Add all ingredients to slow cooker, then fill with water to cover.
This is more of a template rather than a recipe, because making bone broth is very forgiving.
Include all the ingredients above and you'll be guaranteed a nourishing delicious broth.
Method.
In a slow cooker; add bones, carcass, feet and necks of chicken.
Add apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, vegetables, herbs, a few peppercorns, and one bay leaf.
Fill with filtered water to cover.
Add lid and set cooker on low for at least 24 hours.
When finished, remove bones and veggies with tongs.
Strain broth into glass jars. [Pint or quart mason jars work well.]
Store in refrigerator for up to 7 days or freeze up to 6 months. [Fill jars 3/4 full to avoid bursting].
Notes.
My broth is jiggly, is this a problem?
This is a good thing because the broth is full of collagen which is super nutritious.
I have a fat layer on top.
You can leave it and when you reheat it will melt into your broth or you can skim it off and save it to use as a wonderful cooking fat.
When should I drink bone broth?
First thing in the morning is a great time because your body will readily absorb all the healing nutrients, but anytime is helpful for your health.
When should I salt my broth?
Season your broth when you want to use it to avoid adding too much salt.
Do I have to heat up the broth?
Not necessarily, you can add bone broth to smoothies, chia pudding or other recipes to boost the nutritional content.
